Martha (Snowdon) Stem, passed away on Sunday, September 16, 2007 in South Pasadena, Florida. Born in Oil City, PA., she was the daughter of the late Wayne C. and Nettie Snowdon Stem. She was a graduate of Virginia (Junior) College School of Journalism, Roanoke, VA and of Chatham College, Pittsburgh, PA. She was a member of the East Liberty Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, PA. She was on the staffs of the Pittsburgh PRESS and the St. Petersburg TIMES prior to becoming executive secretary of the American Optometric Association's Department of Public Information. In 1953 she joined the Administrative Staff of the Optometric Extension Program Foundation as Director of the Department of Professional Relations. She also served as editor of the OEP NEWS and was the author of 23 volumes on Public Relations. At the time of her retirement from OEP in 1978, she was consultant to the OEP Department of Assistants, a member of the board of directors of Volunteers for Vision and optometric correspondent for Academic Therapy Publications. She was listed in Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in the South & Southwest, International Optical Year Book and The Compendium: Persons of Eminence in Exceptional Education. Viewing will be held from 1 to 3 PM on Thursday, September 27th at R. Lee Williams & Son Funeral Home, 3530 49th Street North , St. Petersburg, FL. Additional visitation will be held on Monday, October 1, 2007 from Noon to 2:00 PM, the hour of service, in the Novak Funeral Home, Brownsville, PA. Interment will follow in Redstone Cemetery, Brownsville, PA.
