John R. Swearingen, 102, of Brownsville, PA, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2016 at his home.
He was born February 19, 1914, in Fairmont, WV, the son of Harold Van and Ethel (Teggart) Swearingen. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Lee (Hanes) Swearingen, son Donald Van Swearingen and all of his brothers and sisters.
John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an instructor in aircraft instrumentation. He graduated from California State College with a major in industrial arts and minor in mathematics and then received his Master of Arts Degree in Industrial Education from the University of Maryland. He taught in the Brownsville School system and served as chairman of the Industrial Arts Department and building principal. In 1972 he was installed as President for the Industrial Arts Association of Pennsylvania. He was the Director of Industrial Arts at California University of Pennsylvania until he retired. John belonged to the First United Christian Church in Brownsville. He loved his church and was very active, serving as Elder and Trustee.
He will be sadly missed by his children, Sandra Swearingen, O'Falon, IL and Robert Swearingen and wife Anne, Indianapolis, IN; three grandchildren, Rachel, Nathan and Garrett Swearingen and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends will be received in the NOVAK FUNERAL HOME, 515 Front Street, Brownsville, PA on Friday, May 20, 2016 from 2-4 and 6-9 PM and Saturday, May 21, 2016 until 10:00 AM the hour of service with Rev. Paul Sandusky officiating.
Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park in Brier Hill, PA.
