Janice A. Smetanka

Janice A. Smetanka, 84, of Daisytown, formerly of Perryopolis, passed away Friday, June 14, 2024 at North Strabane Rehabilitation and Wellness, Canonsburg. Born in Brownsville on January 25, 1940, a daughter of the late Fred A. Groves and the late Eva Mae (Roberts) Groves.

Janice loved to crochet, enjoyed shopping and going out to dinner, and loved socializing with others. Janice was a great mother, homemaker, and farmer. On November 25, 1962, Janice married the love of her life, the late Joseph A. Smetanka who passed away March 7, 2011; just months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. They spent many years raising their four children on their farm, the late Joseph Smetanka, Kimberly (Kimmy Ann) Cunningham, Tim Smetanka, and Denice Joseph. In addition to her children, she is survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a special sister in-law, Martha Hela. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Mary Fransis, Fred Groves, Jr., Regina Umbel, Nancy Ritter, and Darrell Groves. Janice (mom) will truly be missed by all that knew and spent time with her during her illness. I will always love you mom.

Friends will be received at the NOVAK-MELENYZER FUNERAL HOME, 515 Front Street, Brownsville, PA 15417, from 2 :00 to 4:00p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2024. A blessing service will take place in the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, with the Rev. Fr. Kevin Dominik officiating.
