Gertrude (Gert) Mays Obituary

Gertrude (Gert) Ann Dickinson Mays

Daughter of the late William and Gertrude Dickinson (deceased) was born on May 18, 1928 at Brownsville General Hospital, Brownsville, PA.

She departed this life on January 8, 2019 at Mon Valley Care Center in Monongahela, PA.

She was one of six children, Thelma, Dorothy, George; Ralph all preceded her in death. Sarah Dillard is her only living sibling.

Gert’s husband (Alonzo) and daughter (Dorothy Marlene) preceded her in death.

Gertrude was a devoted and loving mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend to many.  She was devoted to her family and was there to anyone who needed help, had a big heart, and loved to talk and knew everyone.  She was truly loved and will be missed by her loving family and friends.

She attended Brownsville Area High School. Worked at the Uniontown Fayette County Home during the late 60’s and also worked during elections for the Fayette County Election Boards transporting individuals to the voting polls.

She loved to read her Bible, music, singing and praising God. She loved to paint, crochet, knit, and cooking and baking her sweets. She also loved the Pittsburgh Steelers football team.

She was a devoted member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. in Brownsville, PA and worshiped there until her health failed.

She loved to sit on the porch with her dog Precious and talk with her neighbors especially Roberta Pirt Dugan. She was indeed a wonderful and special friend to Mom and we thank her.

Gertrude leaves to cherish and love her forever, her son, Alonzo Mays, Jr. (Janice), daughter, Rhonda Alderman (Curtis, Sr.) and her loving and devoted, just like a daughter, Charyln Caranathan (PA).

Son-in-law, Rodger Armwood; sisters-in-law, Aseneth Mays Blackwell, Thelma Dickinson, Mary Louise Dickinson.

Brothers-in-law, Leo Mays (Betty) and Joe Mays (Bernice).

She had six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and family and friends and one God Child, Betsy Oliver.  A committal service will be held Saturday, January 12, 2019 at LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill, PA

Arrangements and professional services are in the care of NOVAK FUNERAL HOME, 515 Front Street Brownsville, PA 15417.
