Theda Mae “Penny” Sawyers, 89, formerly of West Brownsville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 21, 2019, at her daughter’s home in Brownsville, surrounded by family. Born on October 26, 1929 in Alicia, Monongahela Twp., Greene County, she was the daughter of the late John and Opal (Phillips) Wagner.
Theda was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, in West Brownsville, and currently a member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene, in Coal Center. She had been employed by the G.C. Murphy Co., in Brownsville, and was a homemaker who enjoyed Christian music, going to flea markets, and her family.
On June 6, 1953 she married Robert Sawyers, who passed away in May, 2017. In addition to her husband and parents, she is predeceased by siblings, John Wagner, Robert Wagner, Martha Haney, Vivian Maple, Gertrude Pauley, and Jean Lewis.
Theda is survived by her children, John Sawyers, of West Brownsville, and Robyne Manchas and husband Edward, of Brownsville; grandchildren, Robert C. Sawyers, of Somerset, Felicia, Paul, and Theresa Sawyers, all of West Brownsville, Zachary Manchas, of Denver, CO, and Brandon Manchas and fiancé Emily Radabaugh, of Brownsville; sister, Connie Barb, of Greene County; brother, James Wagner, of Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm on Sunday, February 24 in the NOVAK FUNERAL HOME, 515 Front St., Brownsville. Funeral services will be at 11 am on Monday in the funeral home with Pastor Rodney Johnson celebrating. Interment will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park.
